Teacher By Day {Nappy Cakes by Erin}

It feels like the perfect time to sit down and post another instalment of the Teacher by Day interview series - a cozy winter afternoon at the end of a long week. Little Man is asleep and the heater is on! Today's Biz Mum Erin is a fellow member of the Mums With Hustle Biz Club and creates nappy cakes - perfect for baby showers! She isn't currently teaching, but plans to return later in the year. Erin also has a Facebook group dedicated to sharing and celebrating play ideas which I'm sure many of your will be interested in joining.

Welcome Erin.

1. Please introduce yourself and your family to our Teacher Types community :)

Hi there, I'm Erin, a Mum of two, wife and a Primary School teacher. I'm also the owner of Nappy Cakes by Erin and the Founder of Celebrate Play.

2. How long have you been teaching for? You mentioned that you are planning to return later this year. Do you know what your role will be?

I began teaching in an Early Childhood Setting whilst studying and then moved into Primary Schools shortly after completing my studies...making my teaching experience about 15 years collectively. Boy, does that calculation make me feel old. That's right, I plan to return later this year part time with my role yet to be confirmed.

3. You say on your about page that you are very crafty! And that's how Nappy Cakes by Erin came about.

Yes, it's true, I do love all things crafty, however, I'm not always good at it though (e.g. cake decorating is certainly not my forte but something I love doing). From a very young age I have enjoyed a variety of creative pursuits such as: colouring in, scrapbooking, photography, visual arts, cross stitching, you name it!! And yes - it all began with an idea - creating a nappy cake as a way to avoid wasting the newborn nappies my baby had outgrown. Designing nappy cakes became a bit of a hobby by making gifts for my family and friends to use themselves or give to others as gifts and before long with word of mouth, a business named Nappy Cakes by Erin was born. Since then my passion for pretty and practical gifts for Mums has evolved and more recently after a long hiatus it has led me to supporting and inspiring others with the newest addition to our family - a blog and a support group for parents and educators focusing on play and play organisation. This journey is taking us in a slightly different direction for the time being, however, in due time (as with any changes a new addition brings) things shall fit together nicely.

4. What does a typical day look like for you?

Mmm, a typical day for me has varied over the years between the demands of being a Mum of one to two, the organisation of running a household intertwined with juggling a small biz, teaching part time, blogging and running Celebrate Play. The days are planned from beginning to end so I can try to fit everything in (systems are in place to help but some days, plans simply fall apart - the nature of family life). My mornings begin rather early and I spend a short period of time focusing on Celebrate Play before the mummy duties begin. Then the days are filled with play, activities, teaching and social commitments. Then at night and for a short time on the weekend, I tend to focus on Nappy Cakes by Erin, when my children are busily playing with Daddy and/or other family members.

5. What part of Australia are you from?

I'm from Sydney.

6. How do you spend your weekends?

My weekends are spent with my family attending extracurricular activities, planning for the week ahead (A Sunday well spent brings a week of content) and experiencing family adventures. And when I'm teaching there is a splatter of school work to do.

7. Coffee or tea?

Neither...water is my go to drink.

8. Ultimate holiday destination?

I would love to visit Finland to check out the lifestyle focus on play and education and visit the local schools.

9. What do you love about having your own business?

Besides the opportunity to be creative, I absolutely love being able to celebrate motherhood and babies with my customers. Whilst I generally don't get to see the recipients of the gifts, as I tend to communicate with the person giving the gift, I love sharing in their excitement and providing them with a pretty and practical gift to give their family, friends or colleagues.
