Celebrating the RIO Olympics With Your Kids

It only happens every four years, but the Olympic games are nearly upon us, commencing on the 5th – 21st of August. If your child is under 4, this would be their first exposure to the world wide sporting event (well honestly even if they are 5-6 they probably wont remember much from the 2012 Olympics). As you know Miss M is 3, so here are some activities we’ll be doing at home this month!

The movie Rio is a great place to start! This is a beautiful clip (I have a thing for birds)...

This guest post from Benita has lots of great bird craft ideas you could do as a follow up to the movie. Her little one loves birds too - and she just keeps asking for more. These paper plate birds are super simple.

The Olympics is a good chance to look at a world map and locate where Rio actually is. Show your child where they live too!

It's also a great time to encourage your little ones to do some more physical activity like this indoor obstacle course.

Check out this great Olympic Rings worksheet from Tot Schooling - I think Miss M did a great job!

Or make your own Olympic torch from Twinkl. (Twinkl has heaps of other resources too)

Finally no Olympics activity would be complete without a gold medal!

I must admit I'm not a very sporty time, I love watching the opening ceremony, the rhythmic gymnastics and the diving :)

  1. I'm the same as you - love all the gymnastics, diving etc - things you don't get to see very often - and the opening and closing ceremonies.
