Adelaide's BEST Nature Playgrounds

The October school holidays fall at such a beautiful time of year. The weather is just perfect to get outside and experience our natural world. Gorgeous nature playgrounds and spaces are popping up all over Adelaide and are becoming increasingly popular as our communities are seeing the value in getting kids climbing trees, taking responsible risks, getting dirty and connecting with their environments.

So as you start thinking about how you're going to fill the next two weeks - schedule in some time to visit some of Adelaide's best nature playgrounds.

Glenelg Foreshore

Morialta Conservation Park, Stradbroke Road, Woodforde

First up is the newest addition! The recently opened Morialta Conservation Park is absolutely amazing! This park holds a special place in my heart as I grew up just a stone's throw down the creek and spent much of my childhood here; walking the dog, looking for tadpoles in the creek and having family barbeques. So I was so keen to take the kids there on the day it opened. I couldn't wait, and was so impressed!

The play areas are generously spread out all over the conservation park area, as well as ample seating, barbecue and toilet facilities. There are plenty of opportunities for your little adventurer to climb and explore, balance and slide. I found this playground better for my four year old, but there wasn't really a lot that Little Man could safely do. The creek is another exciting element of the park, as stepping stones, islands and stick houses have been carefully crafted to invite children to carefully discover the creek area. The snake tunnel and giant eagle's nest certainly add a wow factor and point of difference to this playground. It's like no other!

Word on the grapevine is that this playground has been extremely popular since it opened, and parking can be difficult. Also, if you park a little further up, you can take the 30 minute walk to Morialta Falls as well which is a truly beautiful sight!

The Adelaide Zoo, Frome Road, Adelaide

When the Adelaide Zoo was recently renovated, one of the best additions was the new nature playground. It's something the Zoo was really missing before and now it's become a highlight. Kids will enjoy being among the tree tops as they access the main aerial platforms by climbing ropes, steps or ladders (depending on their ability). They can walk along the bridges and platforms to either the twisty spiral slide or the straight slide. In-ground mini trampolines are always a winner and we love the swings too. A friend recently told me that she often uses her Zoo membership just to pop in and visit the playground.

Glenelg Foreshore

As if Glenelg could get any better - they went and put a stunning playground right smack bang on the foreshore, right in the heart of it. You can even see the waterslide from The Beachouse in the corner of this photo!

What we love about this one is the water play element as a tap at one end can provide water to trickle through a little creek allowing for sand + water messy play fun. The giant slide is super fun too - although keen an eye on your little ones as it's easy to loose sight of them as they go up the steps behind it. Shade has recently been added making a huge difference on hot days. As you can see above, this playground has the in-ground trampolines too. My kids can't get enough of them (even though Little Man hasn't learnt to jump yet lol).

Bristow Smith Reserve, Barrage Rd, Goolwa

Our family often takes little weekend trips to Goolwa, and we always stop by this playground (in fact on one of our holidays we stayed across the road from it!). A highlight of this playground is the 10 metre ship at the centre where little ones can engage their imaginations and pretend they are the captain sailing upon the sea. There are sensory and musical elements, water play, sand, slides, and opportunities to climb and balance. It's right on the river, which allows for more splashing and paddling, but as always supervise your little ones closely near the water's edge.

Cobbler Creek, Salisbury East

Cobbler Creek is not too far from us, and it's really popular with local bike riders! As well as a gorgeous nature playground, it has fantastic bike paths and trails too (we are yet to attempt this but I'm sure as the kids get older we will). There's lots to explore and it's suitable for all ages. Miss M loves the flying fox and Little Man loves to play in the sand area with the pulley system. Grassy areas, tables, barbeques and toilets make it perfect for a family day out!

Finally, if you want even more nature play opportunities these holidays - you really must check out Wild Imagination (read my previous post here). They are now located in Bonython Park near the kiosk and playground but just as fun as ever; mud pit, potion making, construction, water play, clay and nature craft. Take the kids for a family fun day or book your school age kids in for a Vacation Care day.

Which playground in Adelaide is your favourite?
