Today Miss M and I headed on the train (as we do) to the Adelaide Festival Theatre to see Mister Maker LIVE! If you read this blog, I'm sure you can imagine that I was just as excited as her!

The Magical, Enchanting Disney on Ice Experience

Yesterday would have to have been a highlight of Miss M's childhood. We went to Disney on Ice and it was AMAZING!
In her typical signature style, she was beyond excited the night before, all morning at home, talked to her Nanna on the phone to tell her she was excited, excited in the car...and then the shy little thing shrunk back inside herself with the overwhelming sense of the massive event. The beyond imaginable large Adelaide Entertainment centre, all the people, all the steps to climb and all the ice was a lot to take in. She sat quietly, watched, observed and took it all in. She isn't one to sing, dance and join in {unless she's at home}, but I watched her watching the performance and could tell how much she was captivated by it.

I absolutely love live theatre for young kids. I think it's just such a wonderful experience. In the past we've been to see The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Play School and more recently at the Adelaide Fringe, we saw the Amazing Drumming Monkeys. All have been fabulous!
You may have read this previous post on Miss M's Ben & Holly 3rd Birthday, as it's become her newest favourite kids show! And I must admit I quite like it too (you know how there are some kids shows that you just can't stand - but others are quite sweet...). So off we went with Nanna to see Ben & Holly's Little Kingdom LIVE at the Adelaide Festival Theatre (Dunstan Playhouse).

I really rate it when kids live performances integrate movement and interaction from the audience - it's so important because little people can't sit still for too long. In the Ben & Holly show, familiar and favourite episodes such as 'King Thistle is not well' and 'The Tooth Fairy' were integrated with brand new songs and dances to enjoy. Children were invited to run, fly, giggle, dance, sing and interact with the performance. Miss M loved pointing out where Ben was hiding, and she was so excited when the famous Gaston the ladybird made his appearance. The show has a short intermission, which is also really great for the kids to have a drink/snack/toilet break.

Something quite unique about the characters (as you can see in the photos) is the masks they wear to make them look just like they do in the TV show. Because you can't see the performer's faces, they had to use really big actions with the rest of their bodies - which they absolutely did (Ben Elf was my favourite).

We Loved the Play School Concert {Review}

I, like many other children born in the 80s, grew up watching Play School. Does this clip bring back those childhood memories for you as well?
Awww! I get quite nostalgic sometimes. I'm a sentimental type :)
I truly believe that Play School is the most educational out of all of the children's programs these days (well, for young children anyway). There are so many opportunities for learning in every episode, covering a wide variety of themes, songs, stories and life skills. It's also become one of Miss M's favourites (and I love how we can watch it any time here on ABC Kids).
Yesterday she and her one year old cousin ventured off for their first play school concert at the Norwood Concert Hall (accompanied by us of course!) and we all had lots of fun. If you haven't been before, it's good to know that it's mostly an open space for children and their parents to sit on the floor with a few rows of chairs around the edge. I think this is great for the little tikes to have a chance to get up and dance during the show, I just wish we had gotten there a bit earlier to be closer to the front. Miss M (2.5 years) did pretty well watching and joining in, but being so far back was difficult to keep Mr C 's (1.5 years) attention on the show. He was having much more fun showing off his new walking skills!
The story of the 40 minute interactive show was cleverly done, but still nice and simple for young children to follow. A large story book was the main backdrop and pages were turned through out the show with many familiar characters and stories filling the pages. The presenters Teo and Rachael were energetic and engaging. It was a really special moment when the whole audience joined in to sing the classic theme song "There's a Bear in There" at the conclusion of the show.
The good news is that there are still tickets available for the remaining Adelaide shows so it's not too late if you'd like to go along! Kids Promotions have all the details you need. After Adelaide, the show heads to Western Australia, Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong with different Play School presenters.
Thank you Play School for all your years of educating our little people and here's to many more successful years of TV and live concerts in the future!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show {Review}

"The Very Hungry Caterpillar makes his way off the page and onto the stage.
4 timeless stories, 75 magical puppets"
On Saturday Miss M and her 1 year old cousin had their first experience at the theatre. We went to see 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show' and were absolutely in awe for the whole 50 minutes. It was the perfect choice for a toddler's first live show. Four Eric Carle stories were so cleverly told with the use of puppets and colour.
It began with The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse. A story that encourages little artists to be creative with their paintings and use whichever colours they like! Coloured fabric, juggling balls and puppetry brought this story to life!
Next came Mister Seahorse (as you may or may not know I'm expecting baby number two and have spent quite sometime explaining to Miss M that mummies are the ones who have the babies) - this story left her a little perplexed as it's daddy seahorse who cares for and gives birth to the babies. Bubbles added to the under water experience and the puppets were magical!
Thirdly came The Very Lonely Firefly - a beautiful story about persistence and finding your tribe. Darker lighting during this story highlighted the glowing fireflies.
And then the story we had all been waiting for, the one almost every child could recite by heart, the most endearing little and very hungry caterpillar emerged from his egg and entertained the littlies as he ate his way through the week.
When we read this book, Miss M doesn't quite understand that the caterpillar turns into the butterfly, she always asks "where is him?". But she was absolutely amazed when the butterfly flew off the pages of the book backdrop.
The show has finished it's three days in Adelaide, but now they head to Brisbane, Penrith, Queanbeyan and Newcastle. If you're in any of these cities I would highly recommend the show for children of all ages.
